A Gadsden City High School student recently was named the state’s Athlete of the Year for the Special Olympics.
Anthony Bell is a member of the school s Special Olympic teams at the school for basketball and swimming. “It felt good to get this award,” he said, “I was very excited.”
When he is not practicing or competing for his teams, Bell can be found working alongside the staff at the Beautiful Rainbow Cafè inside the Gadsden Public Library. He plans to continue working after graduating from high school to help his father with expenses.
“[Anthony] started with my team about five years ago. He was very shy and did not want to be at school when he started,” said Christine Lowery, Gadsden High School’s Special Olympics coach. “He has learned to overcome those disabilities and he’s a very good athlete, and has become a pretty good leader.”

Chip Rowan, a Gadsden City Schools educator, will detail the inspiring story of the Beautiful Rainbow Café in the Gadsden Public Library.
Rowan founded Beautiful Rainbow, which functions as a successful food service operation and an employer/trainer of students with learning disabilities. Twenty-two students have graduated from the program and are now employed in other local establishments.
The conference is designed to help beginning and growing food manufacturers learn more about the business and make contacts with people who can help them succeed. It’s an excellent networking and educational opportunity.
