Massachusetts School Building Authority green-lights Amherst to feasibility study for new elementary school
Updated Feb 15, 2021;
AMHERST – Massachusetts School Building Authority last week approved the town and school department’s requested entry into the next phase of a years-long process that will determine if a new elementary school might be built, and if the state may fund more than half of the amount.
This next phase is called the “feasibility study” period.
The Amherst application to the MSBA asked for state help to build a new Fort River Elementary School.
It was submitted in December 2019.
Following the MSBA review, working in tandem with local officials, the state said Amherst may pursue two options, during the feasibility study period.

AMHERST Fewer than one in five teachers, paraprofessionals and other staff who are part of the Amherst Pelham Education Association say they would voluntarily return to school buildings for in-person instruction beginning March 1.
With surveys of 428 union members complete, out of 577 members in the union’s three bargaining units, Superintendent Michael Morris is determining a plan for having some students back in classrooms in the Amherst, Pelham and Amherst-Pelham Regional schools next month.
Morris is expected to present what is possible at a joint meeting of school committees Tuesday, after they gave him instructions in January to develop a plan for in-person learning in which teachers, paraprofessionals and other staff could, on their own, decide to be back in schools. Such a plan is also to be guided by advice from local heal

AMHERST An expanded, renovated or rebuilt Fort River Elementary School, with significant financial support from the state, is moving to the feasibility stage.
The board of directors for the Massachusetts School Building Authority on Thursday invited Amherst, as well as Maynard and Winchester, into the next step in the process of getting a school project completed.
“These feasibility studies will carefully examine potential solutions to the issues identified at the school facilities and will help us develop the most cost-effective plan to address those issues,” State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, chairwoman of the MSBA, said in a statement.
