Bringing community dances back to Star Valley

◆ Dances appeal to all ages. Visitors join from Utah and Idaho. Cassie Hunsaker started a new hobby when she went to college. Now that she is back, she wants to share it with the community. When Cassie and her friends started school at the University of Wyoming, they took up swing dancing. Eventually they went out swing dancing once, or sometimes more, a week. When COVID-19 pushed their classes from in-person to online, they came back home to Star Valley, but they missed having a place to go. “Basically it started because we were bored and there was nothing going on.”

Lyon County Museum Green Valley was established when the Wilmar & Sioux Falls Railway laid tracks there in 1888. The Willmar and Sioux Falls Railway ran between Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Willmar, Minnesota. The railroad was built by E. A. Sherman and John M. Spicer of Willmar, under the direction of James J. Hill of the Great Northern Railway. Sherman and Spicer located, named, and platted all of the towns along the line for a distance of 149 miles. The line was sold to the Great Northern Railway on July 1, 1907. In May, 1888, the announcement was made for the location and the name of the Green Valley station. However, the location of the station was made known the previous fall. Tanner John Sik, 21, is charged in Minnesota U.S. District Court for negligent discharge of a pollution. On April 24, 2019, Sik and Eric Jay Weckwerth-Pineda drove out to bridge near Cottonwood Lake, which flows into the Yellow Medicine River, with several firearms in the back of a truck, according to Sik s plea. Sik shot an AR-15 four times at a pipeline owned by Magellan Midstream Partners, hitting it and spilling at least 3,900 gallons of diesel fuel into the water, according to the plea. Sik and others noticed a visible sheen on the lake and reported it to authorities.
