MUMBAI: The tribal-populated and underdeveloped districts of Maharashtra are among the hardest hit by the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
In these districts, the number of deaths in the first five months of 2021 is two to four times higher than the toll in the nine months of 2020. A manifold increase in cases has been accompanied by high death burden. Gadchiroli and Nandurbar, with tribal populations of 70% and 38% respectively, have recorded a 267% and 263% increase in deaths compared to last year.

NAGPUR: Around 13 Maoists were killed in a police action in a forest between Paydi-Kotmi in eastern Vidarbha s Gadchiroli on Friday.
The C-60 commandos had cracked down upon the Maoists in a camp near a village. The commandos have recovered some arms, weapons and substantial literature and other materials of daily need from the enounter site.
Sources said the Maoists of Kasansoor dalam were trying to organise a meeting with the villagers regarding tendu leaves contract when the police got a hint of it.
The Maoists had met the villagers and were supposed to sneak out early in the dawn but their camp was stormed by the commandos from Gadchiroli and Aheri s Pranhita headquarters.
