The Alton man found guilty of First-Degree Murder in the killing of 87-year-old Eldon “Twirp” Williams in October 2018 will spend the rest of his life in prison. 36-year-old Donald M. Nelson was sentenced this (Wednesday) afternoon 40 years on the count of First-Degree Murder with an additional 25 years to be served consecutively for an enhanced gun charge.
Mandatory truth in sentencing applies and Nelson will be required to serve 100% of this consecutive sentence of 65 years in prison. Sentencing on additional charges of Armed Violence, Criminal Trespass, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Possession of a Stolen Firearm resulted in an additional 15-year sentence of which 50% must be served. Williams was shot and killed outside a home in the 200 block of West Delmar Avenue in Godfrey on October 16, 2018. In a special meeting of the Godfrey Village Board, an agreement has been reached with the Godfrey Fire Protection District to swap land owned by each entity. The GFPD wants to build a new firehouse where the Highway House Motel once stood, giving it one centralized location.
In exchange, the village would get the existing fire station on Delmar Avenue and money raised by the sale of the firehouse on Godfrey Road. This is just the first step in the process, as a bond issue from the Fire Protection District to fund the new construction is expected to go to voters in the spring.

A plan is in the works to consolidate the two fire stations in Godfrey to one centralized location. While it is in the very early stages, a representative of the Godfrey Fire Protection District addressed the Godfrey Village Board this week laying out the preliminary plans and what they are asking.
This is necessary because the fire protection district is a separate unit of government from the village board. GFPD Secretary / Treasurer Gerard Fischer tells The Big Z they are eyeing up the former Highway House property on Godfrey Road.

Godfrey discusses stormwater plans

GODFREY Stormwater issues were the main topic at Godfrey Village Board meeting on Tuesday.
The board approved soliciting a Request for Quotation (RFQ) to complete a drainage study and preliminary engineering for stormwater issues in the D’Adrian Subdivision. Village Trustee Mark Stewart said this would cover “a range of projects” and look at the subdivision as a whole.
“There was one house that had sandbags against its patio doors because the water got so high,” Stewart said.
Board members, however, voted down seeking an RFQ for a stormwater master plan for the village. Stewart said the plan would look at how ordinances might be changed to make sure issues are solved.
