Mass climate change bill updates emission goals, environmental justice

BOSTON – Gov. Charlie Baker now has a climate change bill on his desk that represents the state s first major legislative effort in a dozen years to address one of the most pressing issues of our time. On Monday night, both the Senate and the House passed a bill known as the Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy by wide margins, with only two senators objecting and just nine of 154 representatives voting against the bill, which updates the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2008. “Yesterday, the Legislature met the moment and passed generational legislation that gets Massachusetts to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” state Sen. Julian Cyr, D-Truro, said Tuesday. “In the process, we advance justice for the communities who spent decades bearing the brunt of our collective environmental neglect.”
