I contemplated the issue of mask use and interpersonal space while participating in a humanitarian mission to Mexico. We exercised, walked and wore masks while on this trip. Mask use renders exertion challenging.
A British Journal of Sports Medicine report, summarized in Health Day News, describes exercise outcomes in masked adults.
Among 31 subjects, asked to run on a treadmill, mask use inhibited performance. Those wearing a mask exercised for 14% less time, manifested 29% less oxygen consumption and achieved lower heart rates.
