China and the US have strong economic ties, but are increasingly at odds over military activities. An article in the Wall Street Journal explains that the US Department of Defense expresses concerns about China’s advantages over Taiwan and other regional neighbors, intrusions into computer networks and a lack of communication that could result in accidental clashes. China and the US devote similar percentages of GDP to military expenditures, 4.3 and 4.06 percent, respectively, according to 2005 Central Intelligence Agency data.
