The Boko Haram fighters backed by the deadlier Islamic State West Africa terrorists appear to be gaining more effrontery from across the Lake Chad region, especially after the death of Chad President, Idriss Deby.
Just one week after Deby died from gunshot injuries from rebel forces, the Boko Haram insurgents have invaded at least five towns in Borno and Yobe states, attempting to capture more military bases and establish a caliphate.
The insurgents, who have taken position within residential parts of the town, have being engaging the military in the town in a heavy gun battle for more than 48 hours.
Residents told our reporter that the insurgents were boasting to the locals that they will dislodge a military base located in the town. Troops have, however, put a strong residence even as they were being restrained by fear of recording too many collateral damages.
On Saturday, 11 members of a family were killed when an explosive device targeted at the insurgents landed on their homes. The victims were buried yesterday in Damaturu after fleeing parties evacuated their corpses.
Militants from the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād on Sunday attacked a Nigerian Army location at 156 Battalion in Mainok area, Borno State, killing over 30 soldiers, military sources told news
Mainok is the headquarters of the Kaga Local Government Area of Borno state.
Our sources gathered that the terrorists who came in no fewer than 15 gun trucks also burnt down the military base.
A source said the gunmen came in different groups and could not be counted.
He added that about 30 Nigerian soldiers were killed while others fled into the bush.
