COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - South Carolina will not be making a bowl trip after all.

The school confirmed on Tuesday that they will not be traveling down to Tampa to play in the Gasparilla Bowl against UAB on Saturday because of positive COVID-19 tests and contract tracing.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The organizer of the Gasparilla Bowl announced Tuesday evening that the bowl game for this year has been cancelled.
UAB was set to play South Carolina until the Gamecocks opted out of the bowl because of COVID-19 issues.
The Blazers end their 2020 season with a 6-3 record and a 22-13 win in the Conference USA championship over Marshall, marking the Blazers’ second conference title in three years.

Saturdayâs Gasparilla Bowl at Raymond James Stadium has been canceled after organizers could not find a replacement team for South Carolina.
The matchup â the 2-8 Gamecocks against Conference USA champion Alabama Birmingham âwas announced Sunday evening. Less than 48 hours later, South Carolina pulled out.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (TheBigSpur) - The South Carolina football team is not playing in the Gasparilla Bowl due to a COVID-19 occurrence that has the entire offensive coaching staff â minus interim head coach
The offensive staff will not be able to coach in the bowl game due to contact tracing protocols.
Athletics director
Ray Tanner met with the players on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the teamâs status as it relates to the Gasparilla Bowl. The team had a players-only meeting ahead of the conversation with Tanner.

WHAT’S AT STAKE
The Cougars are playing in their 38th bowl game, including fourth in the state of Florida. The Sunshine State hasn’t been friendly, though, with BYU losing in the 1976 Tangerine Bowl, 1985 Florida Citrus Bowl and 2014 Miami Beach Bowl. Central Florida will be making a school-best fifth straight bowl appearance. In addition, Josh Heupel also becomes only the second Knights coach to go to three straight bowl games. They played in the Fiesta Bowl during the 2018 season and the Gasparilla Bowl after last season. George O’Leary went to three straight from 2012-14.
