Matsu, the American/Japanese pop-up restaurant founded in Oceanside in July 2019, will be moving into its own permanent space on April 1.
Chef-owner William Eick had been fine-tuning his concept as a tasting menu offered to just one table for one seating three nights a week at Mission Ave. Bar & Grill, where he formerly worked as executive chef. Plans to move Matsu into its own space were derailed last year by the pandemic. But in December of 2020, Eick got word of a space in Oceanside opening up this spring, and he felt the time was right.
“We’re seeing drastic changes in Oceanside, and people are itching to get back out again to have some sort of experience. So it seemed like a wonderful time to do it,” Eick said.

Gilly Brew Bar is bringing its signature elixirs to Castleberry Hill
The drinks combine tea or coffee with bitters, herbs, syrups, and sometimes alcohol

Daniel Brown and Nephthaly Leonidas founded Gilly Brew Bar in Stone Mountain in 2018 with a goal of building community while disrupting the norm. They created a coffee shop that uses its kitchen as an incubator for up-and-coming chefs, while serving Firelight Coffee Roasters’ cold brews, cortados, macchiatos, and more. In addition to traditional drinks and masala lattes Gilly has grown a following for its James & James-brand elixirs.
These elixirs are what Brown calls “medicine for the soul.” They are named as chapters (Chapter 1, Chapter 3) as each is designed to tell a story and ties to the bible. “In historic times, drinks were poured out as an offering to a deity,” Brown says.

Accommodation and hospitality businesses say some bookings have been lost due to cancelled graduation ceremonies, but most people were still visiting the city.
The University of Otago cancelled all of this week s ceremonies and parades following a security threat last week.
Four graduations were affected, two yesterday and two on Saturday. More than 1300 were set to graduate at the ceremonies.

They have been modified to be usd in bespoke ‘pop-up’ locations such as the Hassell-designed Urban Coffee Farm and Brew Bar which was part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival this year.
Joost Bakker created the Greenhouse – a modern transportable prefab restaurant which can pop-up anywhere.
But sometimes they are here to stay, such as the Re:Start Mall in Christchurch, New Zealand architect Anton Tritt of the Buchan Group.

After the earthquakes across the city, shipping containers were originally chosen as they are strong and could be reused if the site owners wanted to build more permanent exterior buildings. However the success of the mall means they are likely to remain in place for years.
