North Yorkshire County Council, schools, nurseries and colleges have joined forces to distribute food vouchers. The so-called Covid winter grant scheme was rolled-out successfully over Christmas, when around 17,000 vouchers were distributed to parents across North Yorkshire. County Councillor Patrick Mulligan, executive member for education and skills, said: “The county council and schools, nurseries and colleges were able to turn this scheme around and distribute the 17,000 vouchers to families within less than four weeks of the initiative being announced nationally – ensuring they received the funding to tide them over Christmas. “This was an incredible achievement and we would like to thank schools and early years’ providers for helping us distribute this financial support and for all the work they put in.”

Kell Bank Primary School, near Masham, which has just six pupils A PROPOSAL to close an outstanding-rated school as it celebrates its 200th anniversary has moved forward after a public consultation failed to identify a viable option to keep it going. North Yorkshire County Council officers have proposed Kell Bank C of E Primary School, between Healey and Fearby, near Masham, should be closed at the end of the academic year after its roll fell from 45 pupils in 2013 to just six, despite having been awarded Ofsted’s highest accolade. In a report to the authority’s executive, officers said the closure would be in the best interests of the children at the school and the future education of pupils in the area.
AN education boss for one of England’s most rural areas has pledged to continue to push the Government for fairer funding for schools in market towns and villages as well as extra money for high needs pupils. North Yorkshire County Council’s executive member for education said while the coming year would see the first genuine rise in funding for both primary and secondary school pupils in some time, schools coffers had been wiped out or depleted following years of austerity. Ahead of the authority’s executive setting schools’ budgets for the coming year next week, Councillor Patrick Mulligan said while the Government had committed to a three per cent rise in funding for schools over the next two years, the funding outlook remains challenging for a number of schools, particularly small, rural secondary ones.
