Is Council nickel and diming economic recovery plan?

LONDON, ONT. Council’s decision to pare down of a list of projects to help local businesses recover from the pandemic sparked an angry response from one of their colleagues. On Tuesday, council was presented a diverse list of projects totalling $2.7 million developed by stakeholders on the London Community Recovery Network. But several ideas faced questions about their value to pandemic recovery, and focus on specific business districts. “I don’t see $100,000 spent on patio furniture is in the best interest of the London taxpayer,” said Councillor Steve Lehman about a proposal to fund purchases for sidewalk patios in the core.

London Police Services provide crime update

By Vasilios Bellos Photo Cred: London Police Services Twitter The London Police Services Board met virtually and provided an update on a number of crucial topics relevant to the city. The meeting was attended by police officials, along with Mayor Ed Holder and Ward 4 Councilor Jesse Helmer. Deputy Chief Patricia McIntyre gave insight into London in terms of sexual assault cases, declaring 436 new incidents. Slighty more than 200 of these are currently worthy of review, but are being backlogged as a result of the pandemic. COVID-19 related restrictions such as being unable to meet face-to-face were cited as being the main reason so many cases are currently not being reviewed.

Steps to address homelessness taking shape in London

LONDON, ONT As winter weather settles over London, steps to address street-level homelessness are progressing on several fronts. About 200 Londoners sought assistance for homelessness last month, according to a recent analysis by City Hall, including 117 who were sleeping in tents or makeshift shelters. On Tuesday, the Community and Protective Services (CAPS) Committee received updates on several initiatives launched by City Hall to address the crisis. A vacant lot at 122 Baseline Road W is the first site chosen for one of three modular buildings offering ‘transitional housing’ and support services for Londoners exiting homelessness. The four-storey, 61 unit building will be constructed with pre-fabricated components and assembled on site, speeding up the construction process.
