The first meeting of an action group set up to explore options for the future of a closure-threatened McVitie’s factory in Glasgow has taken place.
Scottish Finance Secretary Kate Forbes co-chaired the meeting of council union and industry experts looking to prevent the factory from shutting down and the loss of up to 468 jobs to redundancy.
The factory’s owners, Pladi, announced proposals to close its Tollcross site, subject to a “full and meaningful consultation with employees”, with the global snack firm highlighting “excess capacity” across its UK sites.

Susan Aitken argues it is wrong to say libraries will close in Maryhill, top, and Whiteinch, bottom, despite plans to shut the buildings SUSAN Aitken has again insisted all libraries in Glasgow will remain open – despite plans to pull down the shutters on at least two in the city. The council leader, who last year promised none would close, has argued Maryhill and Whiteinch’s hubs will not be shut permanently after it was revealed their existing buildings will no longer be used. Councillor Aitken insists the libraries will still be “open” even if they move location and her pledge comes amid a furious backlash from thousands of locals and a previous guarantee from the Langside councillor.
