Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young revealed for the first time that he called the FBI because he believed Mayor John Cranley was trying to bribe him during the 2018 fight over ousting a controversial city manager. Back in 2018, Cranley wanted City Council to fire then-City Manager Harry Black, whom Cranley was angry at for firing an assistant police chief. A majority of council was refusing, hoping Black would be beholden to them for saving his job, thus allowing them to seize power from the mayor – details that were exposed in the Gang of Five text message scandal.

It happened Nov. 1, 2019, at the Hampton Inn in the 2000 block of Ronald Reagan Drive. Authorities say the shootout stemmed from a night of gambling inside of a hotel room. That night of gambling included craps and betting on a Madden video game, officials said, in which thousands of dollars exchanged hands. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Monday three men arrived at the hotel room shortly before 10 p.m. in an attempt to rob the people inside.
