Hudson County Welfare Office worker allegedly steals thousands from welfare recipients

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Public Integrity Unit, Special Investigation Unit charged a Hudson County Welfare Office employee with 10 counts of Theft by Unlawful Taking following an investigation that found he was allegedly fraudulently accessing Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards and making cash withdrawals.
According to the HCPO, law enforcement arrested Jersey City resident Herbert Thomas, 55, at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 15, at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City.
Thomas has been charged with seven counts of third-degree Theft by Unlawful Taking and three counts of fourth-degree Theft by Unlawful Taking.

A Long Island man, 67, and teacher at the Infinity Institute in Jersey City has been charged and arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a girl, 11, who was his student. The victim, who is now 12, reported that the sexual assaults occurred at the public school in 2019.
According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Apparao Sunkara, of Hicksville, New York, was arrested at his home on March 16, at approximately 4 p.m.
Sunkara was charged with Sexual Assault, a crime of the second degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a crime of the second degree.

A Hudson County welfare office worker swindled cash from some of the county’s most vulnerable resident, authorities said Tuesday.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said that Herbert Thomas, 55, of a Jersey City, made at least 10 cash withdrawal from Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards that had been issued to welfare recipients.
The prosecutor’s office’s Public Integrity Unit, Special Investigation Unit charged him with seven counts of third-degree theft by unlawful taking and three counts of fourth-degree theft by unlawful taking following an investigation. Thomas, who was arrested Monday, is expected to make his first court appearance on April 6.
