Hays schools will continue to follow coronavirus safety protocols in compliance with recommendations from state education leaders, officials said Tuesday, despite Gov. Greg Abbott’s announcement that he will lift statewide coronavirus restrictions.
Abbott s new executive order would lift mask mandates and restrictions on business occupancy statewide. It will take effect March 10.
“Texas is in a far better position now than when I issued my last executive order back in October, Abbott said Tuesday.
Hays school officials said that the Texas Education Agency on Wednesday updated its public health plan and ruled that it will keep the mask requirement in place for schools.

Homeless vets, others in Hays County get help during winter storm

HAYS COUNTY, Texas - The Hays County Veterans Services Office says they were preparing for the winter storm on February 11 but that they had no idea just how bad it was going to get. We knew freezing precipitation and terrible conditions were headed our way, Hays County Veterans Services Director Jude Prather said in a news release. So we began mobilizing.
Prather’s team, which includes Wesley Matthews, Sasha Mathews, and Michael Hernandez, coordinated efforts with the San Marcos VFW, Southside Community Center, Salvation Army San Marcos, the H.O.M.E. Center and Hays County Food Bank to prepare for helping homeless veterans.

The Hays County Commissioners Court recognized Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 Judge Scott Cary for his service and was provided updates from the county s new mobile vaccine dispensing team at its meeting on Feb. 23.Â
After 12 years of service, Cary announced his retirement effective on Feb. 28. Cary thanked his staff for its help throughout the years and commemorated the new Justice of the Peace Lucinda Doyle.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra later opened the floor to receive highlights regarding the countyâs Local Disaster Declaration and COVID-19 updates.
Emergency Services Office Director Mike Jones says second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed to those who received their initial vaccine at San Marcos High School from 12-8 p.m. on Feb. 25.Â
