Echo Journal Screenshot / Nancy Vogt The Crosslake City Council learned at its regular meeting Monday, March 8, that the city was granted a 10-minute hearing online via Zoom to the state Legislature on its request to implement a half cent local option sales tax. City Administrator Mike Lyonais will give the city’s presentation, emphasizing the regional significance of the tax. The city started down this path in 2020, but was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It must receive legislative approval authorizing the tax, and then it must hold an election to receive voter approval for planned capital improvement projects within two years of receiving legislative approval.

Wadena City Council members approved a Verndale Lions gambling permit for pull tabs at Iron Corral and a gambling permit for the Wadena Hockey Club at the Little Round Still during their Tuesday, March 9, council meeting. Council members unanimously approved the permits without further discussion. Actual permitting is done by the State of Minnesota. In last month’s meeting, the council approved a gambling permit for the Deer Creek Lions to have pull tabs at Drastic Measures Brewing. Now the three latest alcohol-serving establishments in town all have gambling opportunities inside.

(KEYC) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation confirmed design plans for reconstruction on Highway 22 between Mankato and St. Peter. Plans are to convert the highway into three lanes from County State Aid Highway 26, at the intersection of the Mankato Clinic’s Wickersham Health Campus, to the Minnesota River Bridge, just south of St. Peter. “That will consist of many right and left turn lanes that don’t exist, as well as one section of passing lane in each direction,” MnDOT Principal Engineer and Project Manager Forrest Hasty said.

At the Cass County Board’s Tuesday, March 2, meeting, County Administrator Josh Stevenson led the discussion of beginning the process for county gravel pits to be established in section three of Pine River Township and section 19 of Walden Township. The main concern from public speakers was the proposed site in Pine River Township is near a couple of privately owned gravel pits, and would compete with private companies.
