Twenty years old at the time, Ali won a seat on the Jersey City Board of Education by 68 votes in 2017 election, becoming both the first Muslim elected to public office in Jersey City and the youngest elected official in the city’s history. On Tuesday night, the now 23-year-old Ali was elected school board president. He is thought to be the youngest BOE president in the city’s history.

Hudson ICE detainees go on hunger strike in demand for freedom, group says Updated Dec 29, 2020; Facebook Share U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees at the Hudson County jail began a hunger strike Monday, demanding their release amid a coronavirus outbreak at the facility, a local anti-ICE group announced. Kathy O’Leary of Pax Christi New Jersey, a member of the Abolish ICE NY-NJ Coalition, said there are an estimated 25 to 28 detainees striking at the jail in Kearny. Detainees at the Essex County jail also launched a hunger strike on Monday, she said. “People should not be incarcerated by ICE and people should not be incarcerated during a pandemic,” O’Leary said. “These jails are deadly with COVID-19.”
