Last month, three white students at Mead High School in Longmont, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, jokingly took a picture of themselves reenacting the death of George Floyd. The student who was acting as Floyd was wearing blackface.
The caption on the photo read, “Bye bye senoirs,” with the word misspelled, and it was posted to Snapchat.
Furious classmates of theirs took screenshots of the boys’ picture and shared it, then dozens of Mead High students staged protests outside the school, asking that the trio be expelled.
The town of Oakland was honored by the Florida Public Relations Association for excellence in public relations for “Santa’s Lane Drive Through Christmas.” The community holiday event was recognized with an Award of Distinction in the category of “Public Relations Programs: Special Event” during the recent Mid-Florida Image Awards.
Several members of the town’s staff planned and promoted the event: Valerie Gibbons, event coordinator/permit tech; Elisha Pappacoda, administrative services and communications director and FPRA Lake County Chapter president; and Ashlynn Webb, public arts and heritage coordinator and FPRA Orlando Chapter Image Awards chair.

Although raised in Massachusetts, I spent short weekends, long weekends, school and summer vacations at our home on Beech Hill in Northport. My parents originally built the house in 1965 as a retirement place to be near my mother’s Midcoast roots, and they moved here full-time in 1990.
