$31 5 million awarded to community organizations through Illinois marijuana tax program

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Pritzker administration will distribute $31.5 million in grants to groups in disadvantaged areas across Illinois following a successful first year of recreational marijuana sales. This was possible through the Restore, Reinvest, and Renew (R3) program created by the law which legalized adult-use cannabis last year. 25% of marijuana tax revenue will help communities struggling with disinvestment, violence, and disproportionate impacts created by the war on drugs. Groups will focus funding on economic development, violence prevention, youth development, re-entry services, and civil legal aid. Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton says it was critical to have citizens with lived experiences on the board responsible for the grants.

Opposition to Income Tax Hike in Illinois Mounts

WBGZ Radio 1/13/2021 | By Kevin Bessler - Illinois Radio Network With Illinois facing a nearly $4 billion dollar budget shortfall this year, some are fearful of a possible state income tax increase in the near future, possibly while lawmakers conduct business in Springfield this week. Pritzker said the change in tax code would have raised an estimated $3 billion dollars a year in revenue, so now what? Last September, Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton warned of a 20 percent tax hike if voters didn’t approve the progressive tax amendment in November.

Ending Tax Loopholes Controversy | Alton Daily News

By Greg Bishop - Illinois Radio Network A group of Illinois Democrats Thursday said it is fighting to end corporate tax loopholes instead of moving forward with budget cuts. Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced $711 million in cuts this week, noting the state’s budget, the largest spending plan in state history, is more than $3.9 billion out of balance. The group of Democrats led by state Rep. Will Guzzardi, D-Chicago, said they want to close what they called corporate giveaways and tax loopholes instead. “We will fight to make sure that those immensely wealthy and profitable corporations pay their fair share to our state before we go after services that people need,” Guzzardi said.
