Tourism is a cornerstone for Kansas economic recovery and growth
By David Toland
Tourism which is about using the assets we have to bring new dollars into our state is key to growing the Kansas economy. That’s why, during National Travel and Tourism Week May 2-8, I’m pleased to celebrate the reorganization of Kansas Tourism into the Kansas Department of Commerce, effective July 1.
Every new resident and business developer is first a visitor to our state. Kansas Tourism and local partners create a great first impression for all new arrivals. Working as a team, Tourism and dedicated partners inspire exploration and personify Kansas ideals and values, which all help visitors fall in love with Kansas.

Governor Kelly signed a bill Thursday that would require electric utilities to take certain steps prior to exercising eminent domain to construct an urban transmission line in the state.
This following the 105 ft. metal transmission poles installed to provide more reliable electricity to Wichita State University by Westar Energy in northeast Wichita back in 2018. The installations sparked numerous complaints, resulting in Westar having to compensate homeowners.
The bill signed by the Governor would require utilities to notify the city the proposed project is in at least 6 months in advance, and before construction is slated to begin. They must present preliminary plans, including dimensions and locations. Additionally, they must hold an open house (providing ample notice to the community) and allow affected landowners to make public comment
Gov. Kelly Urges President Biden to Support State’s Aviation Industry Through F-35 Lightning II Program
Governor Kelly sent a letter to President Joe Biden and members of the House of Representatives urging them to the aviation industry, create jobs, and encourage further economic development in Kansas by sustaining and modernizing the F-35 Lightning II program.
Kelly detailed that in Kansas alone, more than 42 companies help build the F-35, providing more than 5,290 jobs and a total annual economic impact of $617 million.
“The F-35 strengthens national security and international relationships while providing high quality engineering and manufacturing jobs throughout the country–including in Kansas,” the Governor said. “It is critical that the Department of Defense and our allies invest in the F-35 fleet, continue to increase production, and keep the program on track.”

Kelly said of the bill, “This scholarship program…[invests] in our students and in our businesses to create opportunities for all Kansans, in every corner of the state…to ensure Kansas students have access to the resources they need to succeed and build a robust pipeline of skilled workers to support future economic growth.”
