UW-Madison will require masks despite GOP plan to prevent mandates

View Comments MADISON - The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced it would require students, employees and visitors wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status starting Thursday, as COVID-19 cases surge and political pressure mounts. The announcement comes mere hours after the approval of a legislative proposal aimed at blocking UW schools from implementing COVID-19 requirements for masks, testing and vaccines.  UW-Madison followed the lead of UW-Milwaukee, which said Thursday that masks will be required indoors in light of new public health recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials in Milwaukee. UW-Madison officials did not immediately say whether they will comply with a motion approved by state Republican lawmakers earlier Tuesday that would require the university to seek approval for any COVID-19 mandates from the GOP-controlled rules committee, which could block part or all of the policy.

What’s Next for Wisconsin After State Budget is Enacted? GettyImages-1065433940 On Thursday, July 8, Governor Evers signed the next biennial state budget. He did so after issuing 50 partial vetoes. The spending plan includes nearly $85 billion for state programs over the next two years. Here’s what happened and what didn’t happen in the budget debate, as well as what happens next for Wisconsin.    The Governor began planning this state budget back in 2020 when COVID-19 cases were surging.  The bill was introduced on February 16, 2021, and even then, the economic outlook was much different. As Republicans opposed federal rescue legislation and continued litigating state efforts to mitigate COVID, it was the competent leadership of our Governor administering vaccine distribution paired with historic federal relief from President Biden that catapulted Wisconsin’s economic recovery forward. The decisions and leadership of the Evers and Biden

Another Audit Finds Evers Handling Of UI Is A Disaster

Illinois and Minnesota Issued Timely UI Appeals Decisions 70% Of The Time, Wisconsin Only Reached 17.5% 14,500 Appeals Are Still Waiting For A Decision   By Lexi Dittrich The Legislative Audit Bureau (LAB) released a report last week revealing that the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is still mismanaging the state’s unemployment insurance (UI) program and they’re failing to meet the federally required deadline for making decisions on most of their appeals cases. “We found that DWD did not comply with federal regulations to issue appeal decisions in a timely manner from June 2020 through May 2021,” LAB wrote. The federal government requires that at least 80% of states’ appeal decisions be made within 45 days of receiving the appeals requests. LAB found that only 17.5% of DWD’s appeals decisions made in May 2021 were made within 45 days of receiving the requests.
