There was early momentum Tuesday for what could be Maine s next big transmission project linked to renewable energy goals, this one in Aroostook County. The latest plan, as envisioned in legislation before the utilities committee, got a positive review at the State House.
Energy analysts say the County has some of the state s best potential for developing cost-effective wind and other renewable energy resources. But the area lacks a major transmission connection to the regional electricity grid, relying instead on energy routed through Canada.

Maine and Northern New England are unlikely to feel any shocks from the several-day shutdown of a major East Coast gasoline pipeline after a cyber attack last week. The pipeline began resuming operations Wednesday.
The Colonial Pipeline connects refineries on the Gulf Coast to markets in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coast, from Texas to New Jersey. It was partially shut down last Friday, after a cyberattack blamed on a criminal group threatened the company’s systems.
There is no âenvironmental justiceâ in Senate Bill 200. Crafted by state Sens. Faith Winter and Dominick Moreno and state Rep. Dominique Jackson in a back room with only the environmental community, SB 200 is bad climate policy, bad public policy and no friend of energy justice. Gov. Jared Polis is correct to promise a veto of this hot mess.
Reducing emissions and getting to a carbon-free world is hard and expensive. Keeping the lights and heat on while at the same time keeping rates reasonable is even harder. Most people cannot afford to replace their gas heat, stoves, or water heaters with electric appliances.
