Iloilo province eyes grassroots vaccine awareness campaign

In particular, Mayor Jaime Esmeralda of Igbaras town revealed that only three out of 100 people are willing to be vaccinated. Coastal towns on alert on possible entry of swine, pork products

ILOILO CITY, Feb. 15 (PIA) – The Iloilo Provincial Government has enjoined the coastal municipalities in northern Iloilo to closely monitor the possible entry of swine, swine semen, pork, pork products and by-products from Masbate. This, after the Department of Agriculture (DA) recently reported a case of African swine fever (ASF) in Barangay Luy-a, in the municipality of Aroroy, Masbate. Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., through Executive Order No. 048, Series of 2021, ordered the close monitoring of Iloilo coastal municipalities including Ajuy, Anilao, Balasan, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Dumangas, Estancia, and San Dionisio, especially their island barangays, of possible entry of swine, swine semen, pork, pork products, and by-products from the Masbate area.

Data from the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) showed that COVID-19 cases this January registered higher than those recorded in the last two months of 2020.  January has not yet ended, but the province has already recorded almost 600 cases in the 42 towns and a component city of Iloilo province. In comparison, there were only 368 cases last December 2020, and 524 cases last November 2020. Defensor said the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases was not surprising as health officials already projected it due to the holiday season.

During the 1st Flood Resiliency Summit held recently at the UPV Little Theater, top local chief executives namely Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. of Iloilo Province and Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City, along with UPV Chancellor Clement Camposano signed a resolution to implement measures for flood risk reduction and resilience.
