MARQUETTE Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday announced appointments to the Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees and the Michigan Tech University Board of Trustees as well as the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents and the boards of trustees of Ferris State, Grand Valley State and Western Michigan universities.
Named to the NMU Board of Trustees was Gregory J. Seppanen of Marquette, a retired teacher who taught U.S. history, government, world history and economics in the Marquette Area Public Schools for 24 years. Seppanen has also served as a Marquette County commissioner, supervisor of Chocolay Township and as a member of the U.S. Army Presidential Honor Guard. He remains an active member of both the Marquette County Planning Commission and the Central U.P. Planning and Development Regional Commission.

ANN ARBOR The Ann Arbor District Library, in partnership with the University of Michigan Depression Center, held a virtual forum Thursday evening addressing how systemic racism exacerbates the inequities that exist within public health.
The economic and social effects of the pandemic has drawn attention to what public health experts, cities and counties have been declaring about structural racism and public health the existence of systemic racism is a public health crisis.

Since the pandemic started in March, Washtenaw County has spent over $5 million in COVID-19 response. Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners Chair Jason Morgan says FEMA reimbursed the county for $2.6 million. But Morgan says they need millions of more dollars to continue addressing the impacts the pandemic has had on the community and not just when it comes to health.
Board Chair Jason Morgan: Supporting our small businesses and particularly our event venues and our arts community. Those have been two areas where we’ve seen a lot of people struggling. I think we need to provide more support for our schools and our education community. We need to be deploying money to ensure broadband access for a lot of these students.
