Pella, Pella Christian Split Pair of Close Contests Friday in Rivalry Opener

When most teams decided to pack it in, the Tulip City showdown went on as scheduled, and from it, a couple of great games between the rivals were featured on 92.1 KRLS Friday night. Pella Christian’s girls knocked off the Lady Dutch 48-43, while the No. 1 in 3A Pella boys survived a 2nd half surge from the Eagles 56-52. The opener between the girls’ teams never saw either team lead by more than two possessions, and after an early six-point Pella advantage and the Eagles’ final margin in the final 20 seconds, it was only a one-possession game for either school with each swinging the game back and forth throughout the vast majority of the matchup.

Pella Christian Finds Split at Grinnell to Finish Conference Competition in 2020

A road trip to Grinnell provided two very different games and results for the Pella Christian basketball teams, as the boys won 61-54, while the girls were blown out 59-21, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The Eagles boys led wire-to-wire in their varsity contest an 8-0 run in the first 1:42 turned into a 17 point lead by halfway through the 2nd quarter. But the offense stalled out from that point to the middle of the 3rd quarter, only scoring one basket from the field in that stretch, which allowed the Tigers to pull within one possession for the first of four occasions in the 2nd half.

Pella Christian Heads to Grinnell for Conference Hoops

It’s been a week since the Pella Christian basketball teams have been in action, and they’ll leave Eagle Lane for conference action. The Eagles take on Grinnell as winter break draws near, and in the girls game, they do so against the No. 9 in Class 4A, and a Tigers program currently playing after three straight trips at the state tournament. Pella Christian Head Coach Brad Engbers knows his girls will have to be ready for the speed and quickness on every possession. In the nightcap, Pella Christian seeks their first boys conference win of the season against a Grinnell team also winless in league competition. The Tigers may be one of the few teams to match some of the Eagles’ size, as 6-8 senior post Owen Coffman averages 15 points and 7 rebounds per game. Pella Christian brings their trio of balanced scorers to the floor Levi Schelhaas is averaging 11.8 points per game, Jaedon Huisman is at 11.3, and Eric Mulder is averaging 10.8 per contest along with 8.5 rebounds.
