The summer heat has pushed water demand in a lot of areas in the metropolis, causing the water level in the Bagbag reservoir – which is Maynilad Water Services Inc.’s biggest reservoir – to decline, which eventually led to rotational service interruptions.
This prompted Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Chairman Reynaldo Velasco to instruct Maynilad to maximize the use of Putatan Water Treatment Plant 2 in Laguna Lake as well as accelerate the completion of its nonrevenue water (NRW) reduction projects to ensure water availability in the west zone.

Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra
The government and Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad Water) have not started their talks on the new water concession agreement (CA), Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra said on Wednesday, April 28.
Guevarra said the government panel has sent a revised copy of the CA to Maynilad Water and “I understand that Maynilad has referred the said CA to its principals and is presently awaiting their comments.”
“Thereafter, the two sides will come together and commence their discussions,” he said.
Maynilad Water and Manila Water Company, Inc. are the two water concessionaries in Metro Manila and some nearly provinces.

Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) hopes that its new concession agreement with west zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. will soon be released as this is “critical” in implementing projects for water security.
In a statement, MWSS Chairman and Acting Administrator Reynaldo V. Velasco said he is optimistic that a new concession agreement will be reached soon by the government and Maynilad.
This was nearly a month now since the approval and signing of the revised concession agreement between the MWSS and Manila Water Services, Inc.

Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) said watershed is the “lifeline” of the country’s water supply system, but the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) admitted there isn’t enough government budget to even set up a watershed management information system.
During the Earth Day Talk organized by Maynilad Water Services Inc. last week, Alicia Castillo, Forest Management Bureau Chief for Watershed Ecosystem Management Section at DENR, said while there is enough budget for watershed management, this doesn’t cover the establishment of modern information system, which is crucial for monitoring and regulation of the country’s watershed.
