SWaCH Cooperative, on the occasion of
Makar Sankranti, have decided to distribute tilgul to
corporators of
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), many of whom have challenged the monopoly the NGO enjoys in the city’s garbage collection and sought to break this by tendering for the services and allowing competitors to enter the fray. The offer of tilgul is expected to open a dialogue on whether privatisation of waste management can really help the city. But the politicos seem to be in no mood to be sweettalked into extending SWaCH’s contract that expired in December and has been extended for only a month.

Politicos demand inviting of bids from pvt players to ensure fair competition; SWaCH points out that it is an extension of PMC, to which the latter agrees.
Further pushing the privatisation of waste collection and disposal systems in the city, Shiv Sena leader Prithiviraj Sutar has this week demanded that the civic body invite bids for the same from various organisations, instead of allocating the contract to SWaCH once again.
