Perth builders trucking waste to country tips to avoid dump charges, report suggests

Perth s construction and demolition sector is either stockpiling almost 1 million tonnes of potentially asbestos-riddled waste per year or taking it to country tips to dodge landfill payments, in what a new report suggests is significant levy fraud .
The national waste snapshot was commissioned by the federal government from Blue Environment.
WA also reported a sharp drop in waste sent to landfill, despite most other states recording rises.
This year only residents who have their bin collected on a Friday are affected. Bins scheduled for collection on Friday (Christmas Day) will now be collected on Sunday 27 December. Bins scheduled for collection on Friday January 1 (New Year s Day) will be collected on Saturday, January 2. Bins should be put out for collection by 7am on the new collection day, as usual. All other collections (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) will be collected as normal and there is no need for residents to do anything differently. Following the assault on its director at the old Crescent City Landfill, the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority approved a no-trespassing ordinance that carries a fine and potential jail time for those who violate it.
The Board of Commissioners for the joint powers authority unanimously approved the ordinance Tuesday. It must then go before the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors and the Crescent City Council for approval. If both bodies approve the ordinance, it comes back before the DNSWMA Board of Commissioners for final adoption, Director Tedd Ward said.
“The short of it is that state parks, who has a long interest in making sure people aren’t trespassing across the landfill, (said) if there was an elevated ordinance that had signage on the property, they would be happy to enforce that,” he told directors.
