Tiruchi Corporation hires 14 more doctors Updated: Updated: Share Article AAA Tiruchi Corporation has hired 14 doctors on temporary basis to augment its manpower to treat COVID-19 patients. They were recruited recently by a committee in coordination with Deputy Director of Health Services. The selection was on a temporary basis. The doctors, most of them with undergraduate degrees, would be on duty until their services were required. They would be paid ₹60,000 a month, said S. Ram Ganesh, Deputy Director of Health Services, Tiruchi. Corporation Commissioner S. Sivasubramanian told The Hindu that out of 14 new recruits, 10 reported for duty at the respective urban primary health centres (UPHCs). They would report to the Medical Officer of the designated UPHC. Besides discharging day-to-day duties and responsibilities, the new recruits had been asked to coordinate fever camps, swab sample collection and vaccination drives.

More people in the 18-45 age group take COVID-19 vaccine

TIRUCHI Vaccine hesitancy appears to be waning as more than 10,000 people were inoculated per day over the last few days in Tiruchi. More than 50% of the people showing eagerness to get vaccinated were between 18 to 45-years-old, officials said. Officials of the Department of Public Health said that since the Tiruchi City Corporation began inoculation for people over the age of 18, the number of people lining up to get the vaccine has been on the rise. According to data from the past three days - May 25, 26 and 27, 7861, 12,254 and 18,324 people took the shot. On May 25, of the 7,861 beneficiaries, 6,659 were people over the age of 18, and 5,684 of them had taken the shot at government vaccination centres. Similar trends were observed for the next two consecutive days, with 10,279 of the 12,254 on May 26, and 14,954 of the 18,324 on May 27 belonging to the same age group.

Tiruchi has been allotted 10,000 doses, and Thanjavur district 8,000 doses. Pudukottai and Karur districts have been given 5,000 doses each, and Perambalur and Ariyalur districts will get 3,000 doses each. Similarly, 5,000 doses have been readied for Tiruvarur district, and 2,000 doses for Nagapattinam district.

All the 335 beds allotted to emergency COVID care, including oxygen-support beds and beds in the intensive-care unit with ventilator support, are occupied. The beds that get cleared when a patient recovers or succumbs to the infection are immediately filled up with the waiting list of patients, officials here said.
