A system is being put in place at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, to ensure better treatment for COVID-19 patients with serious illnesses and reduce the number of deaths.
Two special wards will be dedicated for black fungus treatment, and ventilators and intensive care unit (ICU) equipment will be bought using the ₹5 crore allocated under the plan fund. The plan is to equip the health system to counter a possible third wave of the infection.
According to sources, a committee involving senior doctors from all departments will be formed soon. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao on Saturday against the backdrop of concerns over black fungus infection. Deputy Collector Anitha Kumari has been appointed coordinator of the system.

3,688 beds kept ready to be used in COVID hospitals
Kozhikode District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao has claimed that steps have been taken to ensure treatment for at least 75,000 COVID-19 patients at various health facilities. As many as 3,688 beds have been kept ready to be used in COVID hospitals.
He told the media at an online press meet on Thursday that the available capacity would not have to be utilised to the maximum. A district-level war room has been functioning to monitor the usage of intensive care units (ICU), ventilators, and oxygen cylinders. Data from hospitals will be updated every four hours. Coordinators have been appointed at hospitals to ensure proper treatment.

Edumission, an ongoing project of the Kozhikode district administration in association with the Education Department, is being expanded to benefit more students and teachers.
According to sources in the District Institute of Education and Training, it is being implemented on a pilot basis in 12 schools right now. Apart from the training and skill development initiatives, EMS Government Higher Secondary School, Perumanna, Government Higher Secondary School for Girls, Balussery, and Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Meppayyur, would now get innovation labs with advanced facilities.
Each of these labs would get equipment and infrastructure worth ₹20 lakh in the first phase. The teachers and students would be trained in innovation technology, future skills, and entrepreneurship.

District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao has brought in more restrictions in Olavanna, Velom, Peruvayal, Chemanchery, Kadalundy, Mavoor, Panangad, Ulliyeri, Kakkodi, Perumanna, Perambra, and Madavoor grama panchayats and Feroke Muncipality which reported a daily test positivity rate (TPR) of over 30% for COVID-19 infections.
Mukkom Muncipality and Chengottukavu grama panchayat are declared as local self-government institutions in a critical condition.
