Feb. 1-5 was National School Counseling Week, and North Lamar ISD campuses recognized the tremendous impact their school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and planning careers.
School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a masterâs degree in school counseling who shoulder many responsibilities. They are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents. They work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in todayâs world. They focus on positive ways to enhance studentsâ academic, postsecondary and social/emotional development, and they work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

TROY, Mich. â Casey Crawford is being recognized for her Excellence in Education.
Keegan Collins, Caseyâs nominator, says, âShe s an incredible, compassionate, caring and just thoughtful teacher for all of her students.â
âI think it s a job that consumes your life in a good way,â says Crawford. âI love seeing the small victories that they have, and even the tiniest thing is such a huge celebration.â
Casey has received a $1,500 check from the Michigan Lottery, and her class at Barnard Elementary will receive a $500 grant.
While most parents and families who responded to a recent Helena Public Schools survey indicated they want children in the classroom more often, most school district employees indicated they want the current hybrid online/in-person model to continue for now.Â
The survey, which was live for approximately a week, had 3,296 responses from parents or family members of students and 757 responses from staff. Of the parents who responded, the biggest group has a child in high school and the next biggest group has a child in second, third, fourth or fifth grade.Â
Since the beginning of the fall semester, students in the Helena district have split their time between in-school and at-home instruction, with most spending two days a week in the classroom. This allows the school district to have only about half of the student body in the classroom at the same time.Â
