The Education Trust Fund Budget was also approved on Thursday, it is a 6% increase over last years budget. $7.7 billion will be allocated from the Education Trust Fund. It also includes a 2% pay raise for teachers. The news that the whole state is watching, is legislation on gaming and lottery. In 2020 the Governor’s Study Group on Gambling studied all year long, and estimated that a lottery would bring more than a half billion dollars to Alabama.

The budget would allocate $7.7 billion from the Education Trust Fund, the largest amount ever and about $452 million more than this year. Included in the spending plan is a 2% raise for teachers and other employees in public schools and community colleges. The Senate this morning accepted changes the House of Representatives approved on Tuesday after a recommendation from Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, chairman of the Senate’s education budget committee. That sends the budget to Gov. Kay Ivey, who can sign it into law.

The Alabama House of Representatives on Tuesday approved an Education Trust Fund budget with pay raises for teachers and increased funding for pre-kindergarten, special education and classroom supplies.  Legislators treated the budget about $451.9 million (6.2%) higher than this year s ETF  with a mixture of pride and relief, particularly after a year when the state s economy took an initially hard blow from the COVID-19 outbreak.  We would not be in position to make these investments in our children, our educators and our future without their resiliency in the face of the pandemic, said Rep. Bill Poole, R-Tuscaloosa, the chair of the House Ways and Means Education committee.

The budget is for the 2022 fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1. It appropriates $7.7 billion from the Education Trust Fund, which would be $452 million more than this year, about a 6 percent increase. The budget funds a 2 percent raise for teachers and education employees in public schools and community colleges. The House approved a separate bill for the raise by a vote of 100-1.
