$7.7 billion will be allocated from the Education Trust Fund.

Alabama lawmakers approve boost in education budget

Alabama lawmakers this morning approved a 6% increase in the state education budget for the 2022 fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1.
The budget would allocate $7.7 billion from the Education Trust Fund, the largest amount ever and about $452 million more than this year.
Included in the spending plan is a 2% raise for teachers and other employees in public schools and community colleges.
The Senate this morning accepted changes the House of Representatives approved on Tuesday after a recommendation from Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, chairman of the Senate’s education budget committee.
That sends the budget to Gov. Kay Ivey, who can sign it into law.

The budget is for the 2022 fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1. It appropriates $7.7 billion from the Education Trust Fund, which would be $452 million more than this year, about a 6 percent increase.
The budget funds a 2 percent raise for teachers and education employees in public schools and community colleges. The House approved a separate bill for the raise by a vote of 100-1.
