The Andrews Labor Government is partnering with three Victorian universities to provide real-life work experience to student teachers in the Wimmera, delivering a strong pipeline of skilled workers.
Minister for Education James Merlino today announced a landmark agreement has been secured with Deakin, Federation and Australian Catholic Universities to provide an extra 60 placement opportunities for pre-service teachers in Horsham.
The program will provide placements of up to 25 days and builds on the partner universities’ work to date in Horsham – expanding the number of available placements and increasing focus on specialist schools and inclusive education.
A new Teaching Academy of Professional Practice will also be formed under the agreement to support schools hosting pre-service teachers – with Federation University in Horsham to become a hub for the school and university partners.

The names of nine new 2022 Victorian government schools have been unveiled as more than 1 million students across the state returned to schools for the start of term 3.
Minister for Education James Merlino was today joined by Member for Albert Park Martin Foley for the announcement at the site of the future Port Melbourne Secondary College.
The names were chosen in collaboration with the community and Geographic Names Victoria. Criteria included elements of public interest, relevance to the local area, and the consideration of local Indigenous languages.
The new school names include:

An additional cohort of high-achieving student teachers will bring their expertise to secondary schools in rural and regional areas and disadvantaged communities from the start of next year to help bolster student outcomes, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Education James Merlino today announced $1.3 million would be provided to place an additional 80 Teach for Australia student teachers into schools serving low-socioeconomic areas from Term 1, 2022.
The Employment Based Pathway initiative sees intern teachers with subject area knowledge complete their Master of Teaching (Professional Practice) with Australian Catholic University while on two-year placements at government secondary schools in regional, rural and disadvantaged communities.

More Victorian students with disability will get the support they need to learn, contribute and participate in their schools and classrooms, thanks to the Victorian Government.
Minister for Education James Merlino today announced that all government schools across the Barwon, Loddon Campaspe and Bayside Peninsula areas, and the five supported inclusion schools across Victoria, will receive further funding support to make their school more inclusive for all students, as part of the
Disability Inclusion package.
These schools are in Year 1 of the five-year
Disability Inclusion roll-out and will all receive a base level of funding from Term 3 this year, with additional funding provided depending on the individual school’s characteristics.

More primary school students in rural and regional Victoria are getting the chance to learn dance and drama skills, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Acting Premier and Minister for Education James Merlino today announced the first schools taking part in the Blended Arts Education Program (Dance and Drama) in Terms 2 and 3 this year, to be delivered by AusDance Victoria and Drama Victoria.
Data shows that dance and drama are under-represented as arts disciplines in rural and regional Victoria. This program will provide virtual lessons as well as onsite incursions to students in Years 3-6 at 30 schools, with 15 schools to take part in dance and 15 to take part in drama.
