JS school district preliminary budget shows $883,141 deficit | News, Sports, Jobs

PAT CROSSLEY pcrossley@sungazette.com JERSEY SHORE The Jersey Shore Area School Board has passed a proposed budget for 2021-22 with no tax increase. However, district superintendent Brian Ulmer warns there may be changes in the spending plan before final adoption next month to make up a $883,141 deficit. “What you passed as the proposed tonight, goes on display for 30 days. You can make changes to it before you approve it at the beginning of June,” Ulmer told the board. As it stands, the budget shows total revenues of $42,808,049 and expenditures of $43,691,190, which leaves a deficit of $883,141. The unassigned fund balance is $3,713,977 which are funds that could be used to balance the budget.

Children with AEN can face extra barriers to education and learning making it more difficult to achieve their full potential. The survey asked parents, pupils and school staff to give their honest opinions on current support, how children transition between educational settings, and suggest improvements. Around half of those who took part were parents and 60% felt the existing support in schools did not meet the learning and development needs of children.

Countywide, 38 percent of residents are fully vaccinated. Cuyahoga County’s COVID-19 numbers are improving, although vaccination rates have slowed, according to health officials. The county is averaging about 120 new COVID-19 cases per day, and hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions have remained stagnant, said Jana Rush, the county’s director of epidemiology, in a Friday press conference. “We are continuing to go in the right direction,” Rush said. The testing positivity rate, which measures the number of COVID-19 tests that come back positive in county hospitals, has dropped to 5 percent, down from 6 percent at the beginning of April, she added.
