Opportunity Scholarships: Dem cites pricey Raleigh school but neglects complexities - Carolina Journal

A Wake County Democrat spoke out against expanding Opportunity Scholarships and pointed to one private school as a reason. “State dollars should go to public schools,” said Rep. Abe Jones, D-Wake. “Private schools will get their money, believe me. They’ll get it from churches, from big donors. We’ve got some private schools in this county. Ravenscroft: Great school. My kids didn’t go there. I went up there and they quoted me tuition $32,000 to send my kid to Ravenscroft. Both my kids went to Leesville Road High School and middle school. They got great educations.” School-choice advocates point out that private schools with a hefty price tag like the north Raleigh-based Ravenscroft aren’t the norm for private schools across the state.

The beginning of 'massive' school choice expansion

The beginning of massive school choice expansion Wednesday, April 14, 2021  |  Bob Kellogg (OneNewsNow.com) Spanish A seasoned education analyst says the extended COVID-19 pandemic is helping state legislatures see the importance of parents having choices for their children s education. Neal McCluskey, director of the Cato Institute s Center for Educational Freedom, says West Virginia and Kentucky s recently-passed legislation launching education savings accounts are evidence of the awakening to the significance of school options. They may just be the beginning of a massive expansion of school choice, because there re about 28 other states that also have school choice expansion legislation, he notes. Obviously, all those will not end up passing, but there may be a lot more to come.
