College of the Canyons student Lauren Doan received a first-place award and $1,500 scholarship from the AAfPE. Her essay, “Setting Legal Precedents Amid an Unprecedented Pandemic,” analyzed whether a senior-living facility for those suffering from Alzheimer’s is liable for the death of a resident who contracted COVID-19 during lockdown.

College Of The Canyons Announces Student Hiring Spree Uploaded: , Wednesday, Jul 14, 2021 By College of the Canyons This fall, College of the Canyons will be doing more than welcoming students back into classrooms, it will also be putting a lot of them on payroll. In preparation for the college’s expansion of on-campus instruction and activities, the Santa Clarita Community College District has allocated over $500,000 of its Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund package for the 2021-22 academic year to fund student jobs at the Valencia and Canyon Country campuses. “We are very excited to provide a wide variety of paid employment opportunities for our students,” said Jasmine Ruys, vice president of student services at the college. “After having spent more than a year in varying degrees of social isolation, students can create a personal connection to the campus while also gaining valuable hands-on experience and skills.”

Monday COVID-19 Roundup: County Sees Increase in COVID-19 Outbreaks; 28,578 Total SCV Cases Uploaded: , Monday, Jul 12, 2021 By Press Release On Monday, Los Angeles County Public Health officials confirmed one new death and 1,059 new cases of COVID-19 countywide, with 28,578 total cases in the Santa Clarita Valley. In addition, Public Health reported it is currently investigating 55 ongoing outbreaks which is a 25% increase from the 44 ongoing outbreak investigations reported a month ago. While the increase in outbreak investigations is concerning, Public Health notes the number of outbreaks is still much lower than the 1,130 outbreak investigations that were reported in mid-February. Of the outbreak investigations reported today, 20% are related to outbreaks in non-healthcare and non-residential workplaces.

SCV News | Study Finds SCV Ranks Among Top 5 Most Ambitious Business Cities

A Go.Verizon.com study titled “The 15 Most Ambitious U.S. Cities” ranked Santa Clarita No. 4 on its list, which looked at cities with at least 100,000 residents. “We’re proud to have Santa Clarita rank fourth as the most business-ready city in the U.S.,” said Ivan Volschenk, managing partner for Evolve Business Strategies, which manages the SCV Chamber of Commerce. “We have worked diligently and closely with the city of Santa Clarita to ensure that our city continues to prosper and be a business-friendly city.” The study uses 2019 data from the U.S. Census Bureau and a weighted scale comprising each city’s average household income, unemployment rate, percentage of people with a bachelor’s degree or higher, number of applications to start a business, percentage of population that starts a business and homeownership rate.

College Of The Canyons Enrollment Services Analyst Wins Senate President Award An enrollment services analyst at College of the Canyons has been selected as the 2021 4CS Senate President Award recipient by the California Community Colleges’ Classified Senate. Michael Monsour received the statewide award recognizing an outstanding classified senate president who is confident and respectful of their classified colleagues and the college community, leads by example, and recognizes the leadership and talent in others, officials said. The selected recipient must also have a track record for inspiring the senate to advance and accomplish special contributions for the benefit to the students, staff and the district’s overall direction while also promoting open communication among workgroups.
