Liver disease is a serious health concern in India, especially during the
pandemic as individuals with the disease carry a significant risk of complications from a covid infection. Diagnosing the disease at the earliest possible and taking preventive measures can help care for the liver during the pandemic.
The World Health Organisation(WHO) reported that liver disease is the 10th most common cause of
death in India with liver cancer being the 4th most common cause among cancerrelated deaths.

Liver disease is a serious concern in India with more than 10 lakh cases being reported every year. Late diagnosis often leads to detection of the condition when it is at end-stage or liver cirrhosis has occurred, during which time it is difficult to treat and it could lead to death, says Rajiv Lochan, Lead Consultant HPB and Transplant Surgery, Aster RV Hospital.
The World Health Organisation has reported that liver disease is the tenth most common cause of death in India with liver cancer being the fourth common cause of cancer-related deaths.
In the view of spreading awareness on the signs of liver distress and ways to improve liver health, World Liver Day is observed on April 19, every year.
Over time, people have shed light on the issues surrounding fatty liver disease. The prevalence of fatty liver disease is increasing in India and across the world. It is estimated that almost 20–30 per cent of the population has fatty liver disease.
Increasing incidence of fatty liver disease in children is another worrisome trend, which brings the attention to diet and lifestyle. There is an increasing incidence of liver cancer among patients with fatty liver as well.
What is fatty liver disease?
It is part of the metabolic syndrome with diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol and others. Fatty liver disease is fully reversible if diagnosed and appropriate measures are instituted in a timely manner.
