Power outages in Abilene area reported after storm

Abilene, Big Country contend with power outages after storm Power outages were reported throughout the city of Abilene and beyond in the aftermath of thunderstorms moving through the area Tuesday morning. According to the National Weather Service, Abilene received 1.58 inches of rain between 4:52 and 8:52 a.m. Outages in the Pecan Bayou area left about 2,000 customers without power, said Larry Jones, an AEP Texas spokesman, in an email received just before 10 a.m. Jones said crews had sectionalized the Pecan Bayou outage to another circuit and restored all customers there. Around 8:30 a.m., a circuit breaker serving the Rebecca Lane area in Abilene locked out, leaving 262 customers without power, he said.

Big Country juniors earn 4-H accolades

Big Country juniors earn 4-H accolades Carl Kieke Last week I reported on the 4-H Seniors who advanced to the state round-up based on their finish at the District 7 competition. This week, we look at the juniors who finished Top 3 in their events. Juniors do not advance to the state level. Runnels and Taylor counties picked up quite a few top finishers in a variety of categories, which bodes well for competitions in future years as these members advance to the senior level. Runnels County competitors picked up four top finishers, while Taylor County had three. Rylee Vahlenkamp was first with her animal science presentation and Braden Hoppe in beef. Both also received division championship recognition. Joining them with first place presentations were Kaylee Scott in horse and Jaxon and Hayze Honensee in ag technology and farm safety. In addition, Paysley Branham was third in animal science.

Abilene-area farmers selling fresh veggies, meat, eggs and more

Abilene-area farmers selling fresh veggies, meat, eggs and more At local farmers markets, consumers can eliminate the middleman and the miles between field and table.  Locally grown food usually is ripened on the vine, meaning it has fuller flavor and nutrients. The further your produce travelers between the farm and your table, the earlier it was picked before peak ripeness to make the trip. Whether it ripened naturally or artificially along the way, the taste is not optimal.  Another advantage to buying from locally is knowing where your food originates and being able to ask the farmer if any chemicals are used, and if so, which ones and why.
