Restaurant worker fakes Covid-19 test result in bid to quit

Compiled by TARRENCE TAN and C. ARUNO A RESTAURANT worker from Johor faked a positive Covid-19 test result in an attempt to quit but it ended up costing the business owner thousands of ringgit in losses as the shop had to be closed and all workers tested for the virus, China Press reported. The woman had submitted a report showing she had tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday. Upon receiving it, the owner immediately closed the shop and had sent all employees for testing. All customers who visited the restaurant on Monday were also informed of the incident. When the restaurant owner discovered that the report had a different date and confronted the woman, she admitted that she faked the report.

Taiwan train crash truck slid to tracks a minute before crash

The truck that caused Taiwan’s worst train crash in decades was on the line for just over a minute before it was struck, officials have said, as salvage teams worked to remove the most damaged carriages. At least 50 people were killed and more than 210 were injured in Friday’s crash, which sent a packed eight-car train hurtling into the sides of a narrow tunnel near the eastern coastal city of Hualien. Investigators said on Tuesday that the Taroko Express hit a railway maintenance truck on the line in a “head-on collision” moments before it entered the tunnel. The vehicle slipped down a steep embankment and prosecutors are working to determine whether the driver failed to secure the parking brake or if the truck suffered a mechanical failure.

EDITORIAL: There but for the grace of God Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) offered his resignation to Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) in the aftermath of Friday last week’s fatal Taroko Express No. 408 crash. Su declined, asking him to stay for the time being and deal with the response, as that was the responsible thing to do. The complex question of responsibility for the tragedy will be answered more fully after investigations and reviews have been completed. It is right that Lin offered to take the fall, and just as right that Su asked him to stay to oversee the response.
