Calgaryâs city centre is on life support and now that the arena project is on hold one has to wonder what implications that has on the future of our downtown. There has been much controversy over the arena and the value it will add or not add to the revitalization of the city centre. Should the city be spending taxpayer dollars to support a new arena for billionaire owners, elite hockey players and a few music fans?
I know building new downtown sports facilities (arenas, stadiums, baseball parks) have been successful in downtown neighbourhood revitalization in several U.S. cities, but in Canada it isnât a guarantee. In Hamilton, the downtown arena was part of a major plan to revitalize its downtown that included a new library, farmerâs market, convention centre, public art gallery, major indoor shopping centre, office and hotel complex. CALGARY Police are asking witnesses to come forward following a crash that sent a pedestrian to hospital suffering serious injuries. The pedestrian was struck by a Calgary Transit bus as it was navigating the loop at the Dalhousie LRT station just after 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. A man in his 60s was rushed to hospital. Police say he deteriorated overnight and is currently listed in life-threatening condition. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the police non-emergency number at 403-266-1234.

CALGARY A man wanted for failing to appear in court for an ongoing murder trial has been arrested. Calgary police put out a plea Thursday for information on the whereabouts of Cheth Mitchell, 32, after officers tried unsuccessfully to locate him a number of times. He was located by Calgary Transit peace officers on Thursday evening. His arrest was a direct result of the media coverage and social media sharing of our request for information on his whereabouts, police said in a release.
