On Saturday afternoon, April 24, the Carsey-Wolf Center at UC Santa Barbara welcomed director and screenwriter Catherine Hardwicke for its latest âScript to Screenâ event. Some may know Hardwicke best for directing the first âTwilightâ film, but vampires are not where her filmmaking began. Her first film, âThirteen
,â received critical acclaim as a heart-wrenching depiction of teenage life that still holds up nearly 20 years later.Â

Hardwicke joined UC Santa Barbaraâs Pollock Theater director Matthew Ryan, for a virtual discussion about the making of âThirteen,â a 2003 coming-of-age film lauded for its terrifyingly realistic depiction of issues faced by young teenage girls in Los Angeles.Â

This would be a fair question to ask the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce: Are You Afraid to honor your obligation to install the star, ( leosloststar ), on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that was awarded to the legendary lyricist Leo Robin more than 30 years ago? After all, there s an ongoing controversy between Leo Robin Music and the Hollywood Chamber because the Hollywood Chamber is not honoring the decision made by the 1990 Walk of Fame Committee to award a star to Leo Robin.

Newly golden Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, who made history with her wins at the 93rd Academy Awards, attended college in Hampshire County.
Her film “Nomadland” swept the awards on Sunday, April 25, winning for Best Picture and Best Director.
Zhao, a 2005 graduate of Mount Holyoke College in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, located in South Hadley, is the first woman of color to receive an Academy Award for Best Director, and only the second woman ever to win in that category.
