The Red Oak Hawk Theatre group presented the popular Broadway musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at the high school Performing Arts Center on May 21-23.
This musical comedy, first performed in 2005, features music and lyrics by William Finn, based a book by Rachel Sheinkin, conceived by Rebecca Feldman, and with additional material by Jay Reiss.
Red Oak High School’s version was led by Director Jericho Thomas, with music direction by Keith Lathrom, and assistant direction by ROHS senior Donae Swanson.

Franklin Special School District held a topping out ceremony for its new performing arts center this month and placed a beam covered in student signatures into the structure of the building currently under construction.
In construction, a topping out ceremony is a tradition for many builders and honors the placement of the last beam (or its equivalent), signaling the completion of a framed structure.
The FSSD Performing Arts Center is slated to be completed in early 2022 and feature a 34,000 square-foot auditorium with 485 seats, a multipurpose stage, fly loft, and performance support spaces like a changing room on top of a structure signaling

Concerts continue to make a comeback in Springfield.
The popular a capella group Straight No Chaser will perform at the UIS Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, October 26
th. The group is best known for its renditions of holiday favorites like “The 12 Days of Christmas.” Its new tour, called “Back in the High Life,” comes after last year’s dates were canceled because of the pandemic. It will feature selections from last year’s holiday album “Social Christmasing,” as well as new songs and older favorites.
Ticket pre-sale begins next Monday, May 17
th, with general ticket sales starting Friday the 21
The exhibition, which features the work of 50 artists, will be on display through June 5. Gallery hours are 9-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10-2 p.m. Saturdays, or by appointment. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Tuesday, May 11. The event begins
at 5:15 p.m. and will include local students and community service groups. Artists will be on hand to speak about their motivations and the inspirations behind their work. The event is free and open to the public. Audience members will be invited to interact and ask questions of the artists.
The festival includes fifty 2D, 3D, filmmakers, and live performance artists from around the world. Each artist explores human rights, civil rights, or social justice issues through their respective mediums. In addition to paintings, mixed media works, and photographs, a series of experimental videos are also a part of the festival.
