Here s What We Loved about Art Car This Year It s wasn t the parade we re used to, but the three-day festival-like experience was a ride. Art Car By Day Last weekend The Orange Show heralded Houston’s return to semi-normalcy with a special version of its much-loved Art Car. No, it wasn’t an Art Car Parade, filled with thousands of Houstonians cheering various mobile masterpieces while crammed tightly together alongside the parade route, like in the 33 years past, but it sure was a heck of a lot of fun. Festivities kicked off on Friday with the Art Car Experience by Day, a special walking tour of 80-some cars spread along The Orange Show’s property off the Gulf Freeway. When I arrived a half hour after gates opened, there wasn’t much of a crowd—something to be expected since most places of work don’t send their employees out to enjoy an art event during business hours. Look for several large-scale, immersive installations to explore this May. Plus, the city celebrates all those garage and highway artists across the world who take their creativity out on their cars as art cars come home to the Orange Show for a parade alternative.

Things To Do: Art Car Experiences Day And Night On May 14-16

The Houston Art Car Parade has been a yearly tradition since 1988 and one of the city s most festive and eclectic celebrations of artists in the community. Every year the much anticipated event is sandwiched into a fun weekend where art cars can be seen cruising all around Houston’s busy streets. Last year the parade and all of the surrounding events were canceled, but this year, true to their mission to encourage creative self-expression, The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art found a new and adaptive way to do things. The Art Car Experience will take place the weekend of May 14-16 with daytime and nighttime events planned to allow Houston to celebrate and engage with the art cars and celebrate Houston.
