At the beginning of 2020 the UAE faced a conundrum. Abu Dhabi Ports wanted to
boost its cargo-handling capacity, which meant more construction above and below water. A new project with Etihad Rail was also planned to connect Khalifa Port with the proposed national railway that would run through the country. But the Abu Dhabi shoreline is home to the Ras Ghanada reef, consisting of eight million corals, of which 500 would be under threat from the proposed works. Abu Dhabi Ports to drive growth in business through innovation

As part of its continued effort to drive the evolution and growth of its business through innovation, Abu Dhabi Ports, part of ADQ - one of the region’s largest holding companies, is undertaking its most ambitious month-long roster of innovation activities planned to date.
Comprising a wide array of events and activities, the emirate’s dedicated maritime, ports, and logistics trade enabler’s four-week festival of innovation has been organised in conjunction with UAE Innovates, held this year from Feb.21-27, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Abu Dhabi Ports launches coral conservation project
As part of its ongoing effort to sustain Abu Dhabi’s unique maritime environment, whilst developing world-leading maritime infrastructure, Abu Dhabi Ports has announced the launch of a major coral relocation and conservation project, in the waters surrounding Khalifa Port.
Conducted in partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), Khalifa Port’s coral relocation forms part of a series of mitigation measures to lessen the environmental impact from dredging, whilst reclaiming waters that separate the offshore port’s breakwater from the spectacular Ras Ghanada coral reef, which is situated nearby.
The plan is being unveiled ahead of the construction of a heavy rail terminal that will connect Abu Dhabi Ports’ flagship, deep-water port to the UAE’s future rail network, Etihad Rail.
