Pomona Fairplex to house unaccompanied children arriving at border
The Pomona Fairplex will serve as an emergency intake site to temporarily house unaccompanied minors arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis announced.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved $750,000 in funding for temporary shelter and other relief programs for undocumented immigrants brought into Riverside County by U.S. Customs & Border Enforcement and other agencies amid the ongoing border surge.
In a 5-0 vote without comment, the board authorized the Department of Housing, Homelessness Prevention & Workforce Solutions to distribute the funds as part of its Riverside County Asylum Seeker Response Program.
Riverside County has received about 2,000 asylum seekers since early March, and approximately half have been transported to isolation and quarantine hotels following positive tests for COVID-19, county spokesperson Brooke Federico said Tuesday.
The statistics underscore why the state decided to set up a COVID-19 testing site for asylum-seeking immigrants in Indio. According to now-retired Indio City Manager Mark Scott, the city learned last week that the state had leased the building at 82025 Highway 111 near Monroe Street. I knew it was coming, Scott said Tuesday. However, he said Indio was not involved as the state does not require approvals, including lease approvals, from the city.

Riverside County is working with the state and city officials to open a COVID-19 testing site in Indio for immigrants seeking asylum.
The new testing site will be located at 82025 Highway 111 near Monroe Street.
Brooke Federico, public information officer for Riverside County, said the testing site is being stood up at the request of the county. Up until now, the county has been doing the testing in the field with limited resources. The state testing site will support ensuring the safety of Riverside County residents, employees providing services, as well as the immigrants seeking asylum, Federico wrote to News Channel 3.

According to Customs and Border Protection s reports, 8% of asylum seekers have been released into the Yuma Sector. Meanwhile, a band of non-profits has taken the initiative to help those whom are discharged from border facilities.
Almost 90 miles from the Mexicali border lies Mecca, where a non-profit answered a call for help. The Galilee Center helps house some of these asylum seekers released from Yuma and El Centro Border Patrol custody, but not until they re tested for COVID-19.
