Paramount Pictures has tapped WandaVision showrunner Matt Shakman as director of a new Star Trek movie slated for 2023.

Deadline states the as-yet untitled Star Trek movie slated to be released in 2023 will be directed by Matt Shakman. This has also
Shakman is most recently known for showrunning the nine-episode limited series WandaVision for Marvel on Disney Plus and that show has been nominated for an impressive 23 Emmy Awards, including one for Shakman s work directing the series. He has also directed episodes of critically-acclaimed TV shows like HBO s Game of Thrones, Amazon s The Boys and FX s Fargo.

There aren t many details just yet, but Deadline has heard that this new
Star Trek film will feature the return of the J.J. Abrams cast consisting of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Levi as Spock, Karl Urban as McCoy, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and John Cho as Sulu. (
Deadline later omitted the involvement of the Abrams cast in an updated report, so it would seem their involvement isn t a sure thing at this point.) This new project has been scripted by Lindsey Beer (
Deadline says Shakman chose an offer to work on
Star Trek over “several other” projects, which is hopefully a good sign. If he wasn’t a real Trek-head he probably would’ve chosen a franchise that is a little less cursed than this one has been. Also, about half of
WandaVision was really good, so as long as he doesn’t get William Shatner to show up as a fake Captain Kirk whose real identity is just a “tee hee hee, got you!” prank, it should be okay.
Even before he scored an Emmy nomination in Tuesday s announcements,
WandaVision director Matt Shakman was seeing his professional stock rise again thanks to his work on the Marvel/Disney+. Now Paramount has offered him the directorial captain s chair on its next planned
Star Trek film, and Shakman has signed on.
With JJ Abrams on board to produce and a script that, according to
Deadline is currently credited to
Captain Marvel s Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the studio is looking to quickly get this one in motion, with a plan to start shooting next spring. No details about potential storylines have emerged so far, no do we know whether this will reunite the cast from the most recent three
