El Eco leads to more Spanish-language courses at California Lutheran

Professors at California Lutheran University continue their push to create bilingual opportunities for students, an acknowledgment of the significant Latino population in and around Ventura County and the increasing demand for Spanish-language media. In the last few years, the Thousand Oaks university s student newspaper The Echo included a Spanish-language insert in its print edition called El Eco. This semester, El Eco was turned into a lab class for the first time.  And now, professors in the communication department  Kirstie Hettinga  and languages and cultures department  LaVerne Seales, Sheridan Wigginton and Genesis Rodriguez are working toward establishing a Spanish media minor at the university in the fall.

Ventura County adds 93 COVID-19 cases, 8 deaths, 5,861 vaccine doses Wednesday

Nearly 240,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been in administered in Ventura County as of Wednesday, according to the latest public health update. The county has administered 5,861 vaccine doses since Monday, bringing the total doses up to 239,620. The total includes 168,630 first doses and 70,990 second doses, which are required for peak immunity.  County Executive Officer Mike Powers said a small shipment of vaccines manufactured by Johnson & Johnson arrived this week, offering a third vaccination option. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine only requires one dose to be administered. Residents who qualify for vaccinations will be able to see which vaccine will be offered at each appointment.
