On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a $575 million grant program for small businesses and nonprofits as part of his $227 billion budget proposal to the state legislature.
Gov. Gavin Newsom last week announced that the state is offering $500 million in relief grants and tax credits for small businesses that have been directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Small businesses can apply for as much as $25,000 each, and the funding would be distributed throughout the state by early 2021. Nonprofits are also eligible for these grants.
State officials said that small businesses create two-thirds of Californiaâs new jobs and employ nearly half of all private sector employees.
Small businesses can currently apply for a three-month income tax payment extension for taxpayers filing less than $1 million in sales taxes.

In response to the state’s recent regional Stay-at-Home order, which restricts outdoor dining, the City has expanded its JOBS 1st program to add a new JOBS 1st To-Go, which aims to assist local food and drink establishments with access to grants of up to $1,500. Qualifying local establishments can now apply for the JOBS 1 st To-Go program by visiting ggcity.org/businesses.
“For many local businesses, shifting operations entirely to delivery and take- out comes with challenges,” said Assistant City Manager and Community and Economic Development Director Lisa Kim. “The new grant program aims to augment a portion of operational costs, support the shop local initiative, while promoting local job retention.”
